Healthy Eating: A Smart Investment

Published by Adam | Filed under Money Management

When it comes to eating healthy there is a widespread belief that it is more expensive than the alternative. When you take the time to evaluate the situation and your options it becomes apparent that this is not correct. Here are the reasons why.

Eating Healthy on the Cheap

Just like any other form of shopping there are ways to save money while shopping for healthy food. The next time you are in a grocery store take advantage of all of the different options that are available to you. There are many ways to save money when you are purchasing food; you just need to take the time to look for them.

Buy in Bulk: Browse the aisles to find items such as nuts, dried fruits, flours, grains and pastas in large quantities. These will be offered at a reduced price and you will save money on the packaging as well.

Search for Sales: Grocery stores frequently receive goods at reduced costs and will pass these savings on to their customers through sales. Search your produce section to find fruits and vegetables that are being offered at a lower price because they are in season. Or browse the rest of the store in order to find the deals offered on meats, dairy products and everything else that you require.

Buy Frozen: Frozen or canned fruits and vegetables offer all of the nutritional value that fresh produce does; plus they have the added benefit of being preserved while at their perfect and freshest state. Just make sure to choose canned fruits that are preserved in juice, not syrups and canned vegetables with a reduced sodium level. It is a good idea to look for deals to save additional money.

Farmer’s Markets: By shopping locally you will not only support your local agricultural industry, it is also possible to save a few bucks. By buying directly from your local farming community you will be bypassing the “middleman” and getting the goods straight from the source while they are in season.

common-sense.jpg

Use Common Sense: One of the priciest items that you will buy while eating healthy is quality meat. However, you can lower your bill by stocking up on these meats while they are on sale; or by buying them in bulk. It is also wise to limit your meat consumption to a few times per week. As a substitute whole grains, legumes and tofu can be used since these contain a similar heaviness to them that will leave you feeling satisfied after your meal.

Grow your Own: During the warmer seasons it is possible to grow some of your own herbs, fruits and vegetables. If you have a yard this can be done in a garden space; or if you do not have access to a yard pots can be used to grow some of these items. Buying the seeds and/or plants is cheap and they will provide you with nourishment over and over again.

The Real Price of Eating Unhealthy

It might seem like prepared dinners or fast food meals are cheaper than buying healthy groceries but they are not. By eating fast food this will only provide you with food for that particular meal while groceries can feed a family for multiple meals. There are other costs that come with bad eating habits to consider. By putting on extra weight you will be forced to buy new clothing more often than if you maintained a healthy body composition. There are also considerable health care costs that are attributed with being 20 pounds overweight (these costs rise along with your weight). Not to mention all of the times that you will be forced to call in sick due to your weakened immune system.

A Smart Investment

By eating a healthy diet and leading an active life you will be making an investment in yourself. Your return-on-investment is that you will add years to your life, have more energy that will result in increased productivity and have a physically fit body. Keep in mind that by shopping smart this does not have to cost a lot of money.
