Are Superbowl ads REALLY worth $2.7 million?
Published by Dan | Filed under Advertising
Companies are ready to pay 90,000$ per second for a 30 second ad during the Superbowl. Is the money well spent? Let’s see what happened during this year’s biggest televised sporting event.
97 million viewers tuned in to witness the Giants beat the undefeated Patriots. Were there 2,025,000* six pack of Bud Light sold among those 97 million viewers? This would mean that each viewer approximately cost 2.8 cents to target. Of course, the quality of “attention” may not be the best. Often, studies demonstrate that viewers don’t always remember accurately the brand name, nor the product name.
It is a sad paradox that many award-winning commercial ads do not bring satisfying sales to the company. Although TV ads are quite entertaining, we should never forget that the main purpose of marketing is to always have more and more sales.
Return on investment is a predominant factor to consider. I believe that companies have a lot more to gain from other media. Yes, TV is still present in today’s society, but viewers tend to overlook the commercials. E-marketing is offering huge opportunities, there is no doubt that 2.7 million$ invested in Internet would bring more impact than a 30 second commercial ad run one time.

Actually my favorite part of the Superbowl IS the commercials. The games are usually lame but the commercials are hysterical. I’ll never drink Bud Light but I’ll always remember the ads!

Bud Light, yeah like Bud regular was just TOO much, they had to ease off the people a little bit! Come on! I get worse hangovers drinking chocolate milk!

Those superbowl ad figures are nuts - blows my mind, what people are willing to spend. Then again, when you think of pro athlete salaries, it doesn’t seem so crazy. Damn there’s a lot of money that changes hands that somehow eludes mine lol
